A while back I started a new job where The Register was recommended as a source of tech news. What I found while browsing was what looked like the diary of a System Administrator. I read it once and something seemed to look wrong, but I couldn't put my finger on it, so I read a bit more and finally got what the BOFH was. So I skipped back to the beginning and worked by way through 15 years of the Bastard Operator from Hell in about two weeks. If anybody wondered why I would sometimes be sat at my desk giggling like a maniac, well now they know. Suffice it to say I was hooked on the BOFH series, but it got me thinking.

A little bit of effort over the past couple of weeks appears to have paid off, so as 2011 draws to a yawning close, I am pleased to say that I have got the site largely operational. It is now possible to post entries to it such as the one you are reading, and you can even comment on said entries.
In January, I am off to get married in Taiwan, so I can't imagine I will be doing much. In fact I know I won't be doing much to the site! However when I get back I want to get the RSS feeds sorted, along with paginating the list pages so once the number of entries grows, the size of the pages does not become excessively large.
Beyond that it's just a matter of keeping the lights on, a few cosmetic tweaks and lots of posting new material. If you're reading this, then you've found the site and had a look around which is what I was hoping for.
Thanks a lot. Wishing you a happy new year and a fantastic 2012!

With a normal Home / Small Office type router, once you have got it connected, you set a password to log into the web interface and that's about it for security. But what about with a Cisco Router. This guide covers how to protect a router from unauthorised modification or access to the settings. What it does not cover is securing the connections, which is a topic for another guide.

So you've taken the plunge and gone and bought yourself a Cisco router and now you want to hook it up to the phone line and use it instead of your rubbish Linksys or whatever router you currently use.
This tutorial will go through the basics of setting up an ADSL connection to a non-switching router. It assumes you are capable of basic configuration tasks.

Back in 2009, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landings, the BBC commissioned a pair of documentaries featuring James May of Top Gear fame. The first of these was entitled James May on the Moon and I am unable to find the full episode on YouTube. This documentary was an hour long and looked at the challenges of getting to the moon.
It was followed up by a half hour documentary focusing specifically on the subject of his flight in a Lockheed U2 and the training he had to go through prior to flying, entitled James May at the Edge of Space. It's a great piece of filmmaking, especially since they managed to get a bit of Led Zeppelin in there!
